Search Engine Optimization aka SEO are Search engines like GOOGLE, YAHOO, ALTAVISTA, MSN, and others, are robots programmed to read internet pages, index them, and rank them according to some predetermined rules (algorithm).

The whole World Wide Web (www) and internet are like one BIG book, where each website is a chapter, and each web-page is a page in that chapter. At the end of this book there is an index. For example, next to the term ‘SEO’ in the index, there will be a list of all pages that contain term ‘SEO’. In traditional books where pages are listed in sequential order, in index they will also be listed in sequential order (e.g. SEO – 133, 175, 742). Because the internet is not sequential book, but each page is determined by its URL, relevant ‘SEO’ pages in the index are not sorted sequentially, but are ordered according to certain rank assigned to them for the given term (in this example ‘SEO’).

This rank is so important that depending on it, your page may or may not appear when someone searches for relevant terms on Google. Algorithm that determines this rank is complex, and many factors are taken into account. Frequency of terms occurrence is only 1 of about hundred different factors. What other pages link to your page is another. What words those pages use in links to your pages is yet another. And so on… Because of the complexity, and importance of this algorithm, optimizing pages for search engines became a specialized field, even an industry that is now full of ‘consultants’, ‘experts’, ‘specialists’, ‘engineers’, and similar titles. It is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Note that this rank described above is not the same as Google PageRank (PR), which determines a popularity and importance of a page, and depends primarily on the number of other pages linking to it as well as importance (PR) of those pages. Yes, you are right, it is a circular definition – PR depends on other PR’s which also depend on this PR, and so on… (chicken, or egg, or chicken, or …) That’s why there is much more to it than this simple description. What Are One-Way Backlinks?

The way it works in the Internet world is that search engines are sifting throughout the millions of websites to bring forth the best and most relevant search results to the public. Part of the way they are able to distinguish who the front-runners are is by seeing how many people link to your article or site. Search engines see the websites that link to you as votes of confidence, if you will. Therefore, the more of these you get, the more valuable you appear to a search engines, encouraging them to rank you higher than your peers.

For example, let’s say it’s Halloween season and “best couple Halloween costumes” is a hot term that the public is searching for. Part of Google’s search process will be to look for the Halloween article or site that has the most other sites linking to it. While this is only one factor that Google considers, it’s very important for getting to the top of the SERPs.

Many sites have attempted to take advantage of this knowledge by exchanging links with partner sites, creating a reciprocal link exchange. However, one-way backlinking only happens, obviously, “one way.” Online businesses look to get these types of links in a number of ways.

1. Get Your Site Exposure with Guest Posting

With guest posting, preparation is key. The first action you want to take is to identify a well-known, high-traffic website in your niche. Once you’ve identified the site, the goal is to be able to post one of your articles on that site. In order to have the most success at this, though, you should have at least 15 to 20 high-quality articles already on your site, before you even contact the site owner.

You can approach guest posting in one of two ways: If the site has a forum where anyone can post content, choose one of your best articles (that’s not already published online) and link to your site from there. If the site doesn’t have a public space, contact the site owner directly. Using the “Contact Us” section of the site, attach the article you would like to feature and explain that you’d like to guest post. If your post is high-quality and compelling enough, he or she will likely not turn it down. Once your article goes live, that site’s readers will not only be exposed to your featured article, but they will also have a host of other articles to enjoy if they’re compelled to visit your site. And of course, if you included a link back to your site in the article, search engines will notice the backlink and you will receive a higher ranking because of it. Well done!

2. Get Creative with Infographics

Informational graphics or infographics display data in an eye-catching graphic form. Infographics should be witty, clever, and eye-catching. When websites successfully pull it off, other sites and readers will be eager to post and socialize the graph, leading to quality backlinks that raise your brand and reputation.

Come up with an infographic that is representative of your brand or the service that you offer. Once you’ve decided on the concept, hire a designer to create it and then embed your site’s link. For example, if you own a custom shoe business and want to display your most popular styles over the years, you could design a stylish infographic that showcases the different types of shoes youÕve created as well as the number of sales for each. Or, maybe you are a business owner who owns a number of businesses in an area and you want customers to see all of your businesses at a glance. You could create an infographic of neighborhoods with your businesses highlighted throughout them.

3. Submit Your Content to Article Directories

Article directories accept a wide variety of articles in order to provide their readers with a ton of information about nearly any topic. Submitting an article to one of these services, such as Ezine Articles, will allow you to embed a link to your site in the author box, which will provide you with a quality one-way backlink when your article is published. Some article directories even often offer your articles to other publishers who are in need of new content for their newsletters. This process ensures that even more people are exposed to your work (and your link).

4. Write Press Releases

Do you have any new developments related to your product or service? If so, writing a press release about them is a great way to establish one-way backlinks. There are a number of press release directories you can submit your release to, such as such as OnlinePRMedia or PR.com. In addition to explaining your news item, make sure to provide information about your overall company, product or service. And of course, don’t forget to put a link in there!

5.Be Proactive with Blog Commenting

As with guest posting, search for sites that are similar to your subject matter and post some of your content in their comments area. Be sure to include a link back to your site in your comment. Keep in mind, however, that you need quality here too.

Staying on topic with what is already being discussed on the site will give you a “natural presence.” Readers will be more inclined to read and click on your content if your commentary is relevant to the conversation. On the other hand, if readers are discussing hand-sewn handbags and you haphazardly put up a post and a link about selling vacuums, your post will look like spam and turn readers off. So be selective about your comment placement, because relevant placements will get you a quality backlink.

6. Give Social Bookmarking a Whirl

Submit your content to social bookmarking sites, such as Twitter, reddit and StumbleUpon, in order to increase awareness and get folks excited about your content. Many of these types of sites get loads of traffic, and posting on them creates quick backlinks.

If you find that posting to these sites becomes tedious or time-consuming, you could look for free services that will submit your content to groups of social bookmarking sites at a time. Keep in mind however, that these types of links aren’t long-lasting.

7. Unleash the Linking Power of Video-Sharing Sites

Have you created any video for your product or service? If you have, uploading your videos to video-sharing websites, such as YouTube and DailyMotion, is a quick way to create one-way backlinks. All you need to do is put the link to your site in the video description, and viola, you have your backlink.

Leave your ego at the end of this sentence and repeat after me: My sites Adsense placement sucks.

Now that we have confirmed one of your problems, lets fix it and start making some more money. First thing is first, let’s address the most common mistakes site owners make when placing adsense.

• They stuff their adsense wherever it can fit
• Not researching on where the best ad placement is on the site
• Not thinking like a user and instead, simply thinking like a money hungry site owner (you animal you!)

Now the above list was not necessary but I wanted an excuse to use the (you animal you!) bit. Fact is, to solve all your adsense placements, you have to do one thing.

Figure out where your users are most likely to click, want to find links to click on, and are most willing to click.

A few months ago there was a survey done by Yahoo! and I, because I’m that kind of guy, spent that whole month studying those results and comparing them to my AdSense and YPN ads and the results Yahoo! came up with were freakishly accurate to my own. Comparing the numbers again from last month (as i do every month) and they’re still on the dot.

From that we can see that above the fold and embedded in content seems to be two of the best places for your ads to appear (I can confirm this is very much the case as many webmasters earning off their adsense will agree). Look at where you have your ads placed currently and take the time to decide if you’ve placed your ads in the best location. Yeah, if your ad is at the bottom of the page in the footer, or a rotating ad, then you’re probably reading this in hopes of figuring out what it is you’re doing wrong.

Now that you know where the best Adsense placement is, you’re one step closer to really earning off Adsense. What? You thought that was it? great placement and *click* you’ll be making thousands a month? No. The art of earning money through Adsense, while relatively easy, is part of an equation (there i go with that equation nonsense again). It’s only one variable. I’ll share more in later topics to best help you utilize Adsense as the powerful money making too it is.

Do you depend on free search engine traffic for your livelihood?

I admit it. I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Search Engine Optimization (SEO), keyword density, keyword relevance, KEI, incoming links and link text, and where my web site and web pages rank in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) for my targeted keyword phrases.

This afternoon I had a shock. I discovered my main web site was dropped from Yahoo! Not one page could be found in Yahoo, out of hundreds! This was after months of working to completely revamp the site, rebuilding it with a nice content management system and lots of pertinent on-topic content, building links, writing and publishing articles, creating RSS news feeds and publicizing them…

I thought I was going to have a heart attack. It’s a clean site – no black-hat SEO techniques, nothing that should get me banned, just good information, the heart and soul of the Web.

I checked my logs, and thought, ‘Oh my God, it doesn’t look like Yahoo has crawled my web site in over a month.’ This was after getting used to Yahoo’s spider crawling my web site daily because of all of the new, pertinent information (and especially because of the RSS news feeds and pinging). But I hadn’t noticed because traffic was still high, even increasing.

Frantically I searched the Web for information about Yahoo making changes. Sure enough, I discovered that Yahoo apparently changed their search algorithm around the time Yahoo stopped crawling my web site. What could I do? What if the other Search Engines dropped my web site, after all those months of long nights and long weekends really working to create a quality web site?

In the midst of this chaos, my wife looked me in the eyes and said, ‘Don’t worry about it, you still have traffic. The web site is doing well!’

I replied, ‘Well, yeah! In fact the web site traffic has doubled since Yahoo apparently dropped the site a month ago!’

Then it struck me. Traffic really had doubled, despite the fact that none of the traffic was coming from Yahoo any more. And I wasn’t doing any pay-per-click advertising or any sort of advertising. All of the work I was doing really was paying off – in ways I hadn’t really imagined. I just lost all incoming traffic from one of the two or three biggest search engines and yet my traffic doubled!

Have you ever heard the expression, ‘Don’t build your house on sand?’

Or how about, ‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket?’

There are only about three important search engines at any one time. As I write this, I would say those three are currently Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. The more dependent you are on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and placing high on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) in these few search engines, the more you have built your house on sand or put all of your eggs in one basket. You know that search engines regularly change their algorithms, right? One big change and your web site can disappear or all but disappear from a major search engine. And you won’t know if it’s temporary or permanent. If you’re in this position, you are at the mercy of the search engines.

So what can you do to change this, to ensure that one single algorithm change won’t wipe out your business?

One way, perhaps the best way, is to build alternate traffic streams to your web site.

1. First things first: Make sure you have a web site that people would want to visit. Ever visit a web site that was so bad you wondered how they make any money? Guess what, I’ll bet they don’t. Unless your web site is just a sales page and you direct traffic to it from other web sites or from affiliates, now is a good time to start building some quality content – lots of it, if you don’t already have it.

2. Get lots of incoming links… but change the way you look at links. It used to be that links drove the Web. That was how people found your web site – by surfing in from other people’s pages. Then something strange happened: search engines. But as the search engines evolved, they started measuring the quality of web sites – and determining your site’s position in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) – by how many incoming links you have, and what keywords are in the link text. Then people began to link just for Search Engine Optimization, not for actual traffic from those links. Do you really think people are going to find your web site and surf in from a page of 200 uncategorized links hidden behind a link at the bottom of a page and called ‘Partners’ – in an 8 point font? If you want to get traffic from links again, regardless of what the search engines do, you have to change your links pages and you have to change the type of link partners you link to. There’s a very nice free service, Honest Links, that is a grassroots effort by Webmasters to get back to linking for traffic, not SEO. 3. Write and publish articles related to the theme of your web site. Publish them in the many article directories on the Web, as well as the many mailing lists for authors and publishers. Webmasters and Ezine publishers will pick them up and publish them if they are good. You can get hundreds, even thousands of links into your web site by just including a little ‘Resource Box’ at the end of your article with a link to your web site. (Look at the end of this article for an example of a Resource Box.)

4. Publish a newsletter and start building a list of subscribers. It’s one of the best ways to get people returning to your web site, along with the next one…

5. Start a blog on your web site. Post interesting and useful information related to your web site’s theme and ping the various blog and news directories after each post. You’ll get links from these directories AND you’ll build up readers syndicating your posts on their web sites and reading them in news feed readers. Recently people have been gaming this, too. People post and ping just to get noticed by the search engines and get spidered more often. It will do that, but if you don’t have quality posts, you will still be at the mercy of the search engines. Create quality content and you will build loyal subscribers as well.

I can’t say it doesn’t bother me that my web site was dropped from Yahoo. It feels like I must have done something wrong. But I know I have a good site, with great, useful content that is on topic. I know that my site could be back in Yahoo tomorrow, or it could take months. In the meantime, I’ll keep building a quality site that people want to visit and doing everything I know I should. Traffic has doubled every month for the last two months. I’ll bet it will again next month – with or without Yahoo!

Here’s another old saying for you, ‘Dig your well before you are thirsty.’ If you’re too dependent on search engine traffic now, maybe it’s time to start digging that well. The five steps above should get you started.

The first step is to get your website HTML correctly coded to attract Google and the other search engines for SEM.

So, you first have to decide who you are targeting and how they will find you.

You need to do some keyword research and find out what people are looking for. Search Google for ‘free keyword research tool’ and take your pick of the results to help you with your keyword list. The more specific the keywords, the better e.g.mail order silk parachute’ rather than just parachutes’

Once you have some keywords you should Google’ them and check out the number of search results that appear. Be sure to search the keywords in inverted commas e.g. “keywords”

These results are your competition. You should really select keywords with a high volume of searches but fewer results on Google. Up to 2000 results would be a very good keyword to target but you can have more results and still get in the top 10 – it depends on the quality of the results. If the top 10 is full of BBC or similar sites then its unlikely you’ll be able to break into it.

Now you have your target keywords you have to add them to your site. This is quite a simple process if you know what you’re doing, otherwise you can ask your web designer to do it for you.

Lets assume your target keyword is “how to build a shed” .

You need to add this keyword in the page title tag first of all. Make it something like “how to build a shed in 5 easy steps” or “how to build a shed without breaking sweat”

Next is the headline tag or H1 as it appears in the code. Try to make the phrase start the headline, with a similar line to the title possibly. You can also use other H tags like H2, H3 further down the page.

Next, you should ensure you use your keyword throughout the copy on your site – but don’t overuse it. An ideal page would be 400+ words long with your keyword at 2-3% density i.e. used 8 – 12 times on the page. Try to start the first paragraph with the keyword and use it evenly over the page thereafter.

Another tag that search engines look at is the image tag. Check your images (banners, photos etc.) on your site and add a keyword tag to them.

This will mean people will find your site when searching by Google or yahoo images too. The meta tags (keywords & descriptions) should include your keywords but these tags are not so effective any more, at least as far as Google is concerned.

This is about as much as you can do to the html code to optimize it and is only a rough guide. Keyword research is vital to the success of any website and there are more techniques than just those described here.
